Windows Phone Reaches 100,000 App Milestone

There have been more than 100,000 applications published on the Windows Phone Marketplace since it first launched 20 months ago, according to All About Windows Phone.

The marketplace reached the 100k mark faster than Google Play (formerly known as the Android Market), but slower than Apple’s App Store.

Good start

The 50,000 milestone was reached last December and it has taken just five more months to double the total number of applications. Apps are being added at the rate of 313 per day, with 9,391 added in the last month and 26,493 in the last three.

More than 10,000 of the published apps are no longer available after they were withdrawn either by the developer or Microsoft, while nearly another 1,500 are currently in beta, awaiting an update or are not live for another reason. In total there are 88,371 live apps.

Some are restricted by market, with the US Marketplace offering the most apps with 77,450, closely followed by the UK with 72,933. The most popular language is English with 68,259 applications, German is second with 6,231 apps and French is in third place with 5,627.

Google Play reached the 100,000 mark in October 2010, 24 months after its launch, while it took the App Store 16 months to reach the target. However the Windows Phone Marketplace has some way to go before it overhauls Apple’s offering, which recently celebrated its 25 billionth download and has more than 550,000 different applications.
