Users of smartphones running the recently launched Windows Phone 8 mobile operating system are complaining of random reboots, screen freezes and battery problems.
The issues appear to be affecting only the HTC Windows Phone 8X and Nokia Lumia 920, with owners of these devices flooding to various support forums. Three other smartphones were available at the launch of Windows Phone 8 earlier this month.
The reboots appeared not to be app or user dependent with issues reported during the use of a number of applications, with one occurring when a user tried to download Angry Birds Star Wars. Nokia Lumia 920 users are also reporting reboots, with others saying that they have experienced a number of system freezes.
“I purchased mine on Saturday afternoon and it’s now Sunday night. It has frozen at least 15 times,” one user told Nokia. “Have read that a factory reset could help so I gave it a try. I did not even get through the initial setup before it froze again.”
Nokia told TechWeekEurope that it was aware of the issues and that it was investigating.
“It’s been noted that [there are] reports of a small number of people experiencing this unusual performance on their Nokia Lumia 920,” said a company spokesperson. “We are investigating but suspect some apps may be at the root of the issue when left running in the background. While we learn more, we advise people when finished with an application to navigate away using the back button to ensure it is no longer active.”
HTC and Microsoft had not responded to requests for comment at the time of writing.
