Windows 8 Upgrade Will Cost UK Customers £25

Windows XP users will be able to upgrade to the latest version of Microsoft’s operating system, Windows 8, for £24.99, according to reports.

In July, Microsoft revealed that users of older versions such as Windows Vista and Windows 7 would be eligible for an upgrade after the release of the software in October for $39.99, however this is the first time the UK price has been officially confirmed.

Users of Windows 7 will be able to transfer their settings, files and applications however Vista users will only be able to transfer their settings and files while XP users can only bring over their files.

Windows 8 upgrade

Customers who purchase a Windows 7 computer between 2 June and 31 January next year will be eligible for a cheaper upgrade, providing they do so before the 28 February. The upgrade will cost just £15 in the UK, with registration for the offer beginning last week at windowsupgradeoffer.com.

The promotional price is limited to one per qualified PC purchase and there is a limit of five upgrade offers per customer.

The strategy mirrors that of Apple, which releases relatively cheap updates to its operating system. The most recent of these was OSX Mountain Lion which was rolled out last month for just under £13.

Microsoft pledges that Windows 8 will work equally well on both tablets and traditional PCs, with the likes of Sony and HP announcing new devices for the platform.
