White LG Optimus 3D To Debut At Phones 4U

The white model of the world’s first 3D smartphone, LG’s Optimus 3D, will be sold exclusively at Phones 4U when it launches in the UK later this spring, the company has confirmed.

Powered by Google’s Android operating system, the handset features a 4.3-inch glass-free screen display with 3D capability. Users can switch between the 2D and 3D modes by using LG’s one-touch Hot Key, which presents five 3D-dedicated user interfaces, including Gallery, Camera, Game & Apps, YouTube 3D and 3D Guide.

Its 5-megapixel dual lens camera at the back also allows users to capture a 2D video at 1080 pixels and a 3D video at 720 pixels, which can be viewed on 3D capable TV via an HDMI 1.4 connection or uploaded and streamed on YouTube’s dedicated 3D channel.

The Optimus 3D is “the most revolutionary device to hit the market in 2011,” according to Russell Braterman, marketing director at Phones 4u, who predicted the gadget will become “a huge hit” in the smartphone market.

LG Optimus Pad

First unveiled at Mobile World Congress in February, LG’s Optimus 3D will feature 1GHz dual-core processor, 8GB of internal storage – which can be expanded up to 32 GB with microSD card – and a front-facing camera for video chats.

Consumers can now sign up for updates on LG’s black and white Optimus 3D handsets on Phones 4u’s website. The price tag is reportedly £515. However, its launch date and tariff details are yet to be announced.

Besides the Optimus 3D, electronics giant LG will also release the Optimus Pad tablet, featuring an 8.9-inch display and a 3D-capable camera. The gadget will also be powered by Android and boast an Nvidia Tegra 2 processor.

However, the Optimus Pad will face a number of opponents when it enters the already crowded tablet market.

Its rivals include Apple’s iPad 2 – whose debut saw its UK stock emptied within the first day of launch – Hewlett-Packard’s webOS-based TouchPad and several Android-powered slates such as Motorola’s Xoom, Acer’s Iconia Tab A100 and Sony’s S1.
