Vodafone Customers Can Use Home Allowance In US And Australia For £5 A Day

Vodafone is to let its pay monthly customers use their UK call, text and data allowances in eight non-European countries for £5 a day with the launch of its WorldTraveller service.

Consumers and some business customers travelling to the USA, India, Australia, New Zealand, Egypt, Ghana, Qatar and South Africa can take advantage of WorldTraveller by dialling 5555 on their phone to opt-in before they travel.

There is no charge for receiving calls when the service is enabled and any out of bundle charges cost the same as they would in the UK.

The service is similar to Vodafone EuroTraveller, which lets subscribers use their allowances across the European Union (EU) and a number of other countries such as Switzerland and Turkey for the considerably cheaper price of £2 a day.

Three’s Feel At Home service offers similar functionality across 16 countries, but unlike Vodafone, does not require customers to pay an additional fee.

Roaming charges across Europe fell by up to 55 percent last week as the latest European Commission (EC) price limits came into effect. The cost of making a call within the EU has fallen by 21 percent from €0.24 (19p) to €0.19 (15p), while the cost of receiving a call has dropped by 28.5 percent to €0.05 (4p) a minute.

Texts are now 25 percent cheaper at €0.06 (5p) per message while the cost of a megabyte of data has fallen dramatically by 55 percent from €0.45 (36p) to €0.20 (16p).

The EC has told European operators to prepare for abolition of roaming charges in December 2015, and has encouraged them to take advantage of new opportunities rather than rely on increasingly outdated business models.

However despite the EC’s regulations, there is still some confusion among UK mobile users about the new rules, with many unsure what roaming deals are available to them and some unsure as to which countries are in the EU.
