Verifone‘s new Carbon point-of-sale (PoS) device hopes to make shopping more interactive, bringing together intelligent software, a bright display and powerful hardware to offer retailers of all sizes a more portable way for their customers to pay.
Carbon is powered by the latest version of Android and an Intel processor and is equipped with a 10.1 inch front screen and 5 inch rear display. The unit also comes with four USB ports, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 so it can be updated with in store information and retail campaigns.
Carbon accepts contactless payments and is compatible with most recent mobile wallet apps, including Apple Pay, AliPay, and Android Pay.
The system is protected with integrated security, including an encrypted P2Pe system that promises to make it easier to deal with compliance regulations, and full tokenisation ensures no customer data is stored on the device itself.
“We’ve tried to future-proof this,” Verifone’s president of Europe June Felix told TechWeekEurope, “It’s only limited by people’s imagination.”
Felix claimed that getting customers engaged when shopping is a key way to ensure they do in fact make a purchase, with the flexibility of Verifone Carbon meaning that workers can detach the device to carry it around the store.
The device can also interact with in-store beacons, which can then display vouchers, offers or loyalty promotions at the checkout phase, all of which should provide shoppers with a more intelligent shopping experience.
And all of this is backed up with Verifone’s cloud-based Commerce Platform, which gives merchants the opportunity to run rich and vibrant advertising and marketing campaigns, even through customised apps. This includes displaying rich media such as adverts in the device, opening up charity donations programs, or simply rating their retail experience.
Carbon is set to roll out to retailers later this summer, although there’s no information on pricing just yet.
