Twitter Acquires Posterous For Blogging Boost

Twitter has snapped up San Francisco start-up Posterous, a blogging provider that lets people quickly update their content via email and mobile apps.

Posterous services will remain up and running and Twitter promised to update users if changes were to be made. Twitter will also offer Posterous users advice on how to back up their content, indicating changes are afoot.

An ‘innovative product’

“We are welcoming a very talented group from Posterous to Twitter,” the micro-blogging giant said in a post.

“This team has built an innovative product that makes sharing across the web and mobile devices simple – a goal we share.”

Posterous said it was excited by the opportunities at Twitter. “We couldn’t be happier about bringing our team’s expertise to a product that reaches hundreds of millions of users around the globe,” a blog post read.

“Plus, the people at Twitter are genuinely nice folks who share our vision for making sharing simpler.”

Posterous also offers iOS and Android apps to simply upload content like photos to blogs.

Twitter has been a keen acquirer of start-ups over the past year, as it looks to up its game in the face of a massively competitive social networking industry.

Recent purchases have focused on security. In January, Twitter announced the acquisition of Dasient, a young company that offered an anti-malware platform capable of scanning links and websites for harmful content.

In November, the company bought Whisper Systems, an Android-focused security firm co-founded by notable security researcher Moxie Marlinspike.
