Three Customers Can Make Calls Over Wi-Fi With ‘Three inTouch’

Three customers will be able to make calls and texts over Wi-Fi from this autumn when the operator launches a new application called Three inTouch.

Contract and pay-as-you-go customers will be able to use their existing monthly allowances or prepaid credit using the application, which uses their existing number.

Three inTouch

The app will likely be useful for people who live in rural areas with poor cellular reception and in offices or other indoor places where a Wi-Fi connection is stronger and more reliable. Femtocell technology has previously been used by some operators to improve mobile signal in indoor areas, but this requires the installation of additional equipment.

EE has also announced plans to allow its subscribers to make calls and send texts over a Wi-Fi connection, however unlike Three, users will not have to download an additional application, with calls initiated from the native call application. EE, which offers 72 percent LTE coverage, also plans to offer Voice over LTE (VoLTE) from next year.

Three inTouch is the latest service to be offered by the operator, which has abolished roaming charges in 15 countries and has announced plans to scrap some 0800 charges on its network. Three 4G is available in 36 towns and cities and the company says it is on track to reach 50 cities and 200 towns by the end of the year, with 98 percent coverage by the end of 2015.
