Tesco Extra Wi-Fi Rolled Out Nationwide

Supermarket chain Tesco has announced the nationwide roll out of a free Wi-Fi Service, available at its Tesco’s Extra stores.

The service is available to Clubcard members for free while non-members will be able to surf for free for fifteen minutes every 24 hours and all shoppers will be able to read product reviews and compare prices while they shop. “The Wi-Fi also allows users to access their Clubcard account online to check their points and receive e-vouchers,” said the company.

One time registration

According to Tesco, customers wanting to use the services will be required to select “Tesco Wi-Fi” from the Wi-Fi menu on their device, and once connected, an internet browser can be opened and will go to a Tesco landing page where the customer will be asked to register by entering their Clubcard and postcode.

On entering a valid Clubcard number, the customer is then directed to a welcome page where they can navigate to other sites. For Clubcard registered customers, subsequent visits to any participating stores will not require further registration.

Mike McNamara, CIO at Tesco added, “People are increasingly using a variety of digital services and we’re excited by our customers’ reaction to the new service.”

Tesco, which has been trialing the service provided by Telefónica UK, based on O2 Wifi’s technology platform, recently conducted a survey among customers to ascertain the viability of the service. Results showed that 82 percent of customers said they will definitely use the service again, while all found it “easy to use.”

The survey also found that 71 percent of customers accessed the Wi-Fi via smartphones, 11 percent via a tablets and 9 percent on  laptops.

While Wi-Fi is already available in chains such as Starbucks and McDonalds, and possibly in 100 London Pubs, Tesco will be the first British supermarket chain to offer customers a free Wi-Fi Internet service in-store.
