Telefónica Jumps On Joyent To Launch Another Amazon Rival

Telefónica is to use Joyent software to power its Infrastructure-as-a-Cloud (IaaS) service to challenge Amazon Web Services’ dominance of the public sector cloud market in Europe.

Joyent only entered the UK IaaS market itself in April, hoping its SmartDataCenter and SmartOS software would help lure customers into its Amsterdam data centre. Now it is loaning that same software for use in Telefónica’s public cloud data centres powering the Instant Servers offering.

Telefónica to the cloud

One of Telefónica’s big sells is its fibre network, which should be able to send data across data centres and clients at high speeds, promising low latency. The telecoms giant said it could offer 400 percent extra compute power in real time, so when cloud-connected services experience high levels of traffic, they will stand up.

Telefónica has promised a  service level agreement (SLA) of 99.996 percent per year with  financial compensation offered in the event of non-compliance.

“With the launch of Instant Servers Telefónica Digital seeks to meet the needs of thousands of  businesses that require a cloud services platform that is easily scalable, with low latency and totally trustworthy,  enabling them not only to rapidly respond to their own needs, but also to the expectations of their customers,” said Carlos Morales, Telefónica Digital’s cloud and machine-to-machine technology director.

“This can all be done with significant cost savings as customers only pay for the type of cloud services they require and the time they use them for.”
