Waterproof Sony Xperia ZR Can Be Submerged For 30 Minutes

Sony has announced the release of the waterproof Sony Xperia ZR smartphone that can be submerged in up to 1.5 metres of fresh water for 30 minutes, allowing users to take photos and videos underwater with the 13 megapixel camera.

The 4G-enabled smartphone offers a range of imaging features that promise to take good photos no matter that the conditions, along with a 4.6-inch display that features Sony’s Mobile Bravia Engine 2 to offer a quality viewing experience.

The Xperia ZR runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and is powered by a 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM and up to 8GB of storage that can be supplemented by up to 32GB through a MicroSD card slot.

Like the Sony Xperia Z, the ZR features numerous Sony entertainment applications for music, video and gaming, along with the firm’s Battery Stamina mode that can improve the standby time of the smartphone by four times by automatically shutting down battery-draining apps whenever the screen is off.

The Sony Xperia ZR will be released in various markets from the second quarter of this year in four colours – black, white, pink and mint.

“The Xperia ZR pushes the boundaries on where and how consumers can use the full potential of their smartphone,” said Calum MacDougall, Director of Xperia Marketing at Sony Mobile Communications. “By combining Sony’s leading camera technology with the highest level of water-resistance, you will never miss another moment.

“Bringing together the best of Sony’s leading technology, media applications and easy one-touch connectivity with the largest ever range of NFC-enabled accessories, the Xperia ZR delivers the unique smartphone experience that people can expect from Sony.”

Sony will hope that the Xperia ZR continues its recent smartphone revival as it seeks to establish itself as the third largest smartphone manufacturer in the world during 2013. The company told TechWeekEurope at Mobile World Congress that it was confident of achieving that goal having released the Sony Xperia Z to critical acclaim earlier this year.
