Sony Xperia Tablet S Recalled Over Water Damage Fears

Sony has been forced to stop sales of its new Sony Xperia Tablet S just one month after its launch, after it discovered a hardware flaw.

The tablet is supposed to be water resistant, but gaps between the screen and case have left many susceptible to water damage. Sony has blamed the flaw on a manufacturing plant where the tablet is built and has not decided when sales of the device will resume.

Sony Xperia Tablet S

The Android-based tablet was first released in September in the US, with launches in Japan and Europe soon after, and has so far sold around 100,000 units. It has promised to repair any tablet sold and has said that it does not expect the recall to have a significant impact on its finances.

The tablet was the first to be released by Sony under the Xperia brand used for its smartphones following the Japanese manufacturer’s acquisition of Ericsson’s share in the Sony Ericsson joint venture last year.

The Xperia Tablet S was unveiled alongside two Windows 8 devices in August and is powered by a Tegra 3 quad-core processer. It runs the Ice Cream Sandwich version of Android, has a 9.4-inch screen and is sold with a capacity of 16, 32 or 64GB with 3G versions also available.

Sony released its first tablets, the Sony Tablet S and the clamshell Sony Tablet P last year.
