Sony Xperia SP and Xperia L Set For Q2 Release
Sony hopes cheaper smartphones will help broaden its range
Sony Mobile has announced details of two new Android-based Xperia smartphones, the Sony Xperia SP and Xperia L.
The company says that the new smartphones will bring the best of Sony to more price points in the smartphone market and will be available from the second quarter of 2012.
The Xperia SP is the higher spec of the two, boasting a 1.7GHz Qualcomm dual-core processor, 4.6-inch “HD Reality” display that adapts depending on what type of content is being displayed and an aluminium frame, part of which changes colour for events such as incoming calls and texts.

The Xperia L is slightly smaller with a 4.3-inch FWVGA display and a weaker 1GHz processor, but has many of the same features as the Xperia SP.
Both have an eight megapixel camera that promises superior pictures in bright or low light settings, 8GB of internal storage that can be topped up to 32GB with a MicroSD card and Near Field Communication (NFC) connectivity that allows content sharing with devices such as wireless speakers and compatible Sony televisions.
They are compatible with 4G networks, run version 4.1 Jelly Bean of Android and feature customised Sony media applications.
“Xperia SP and Xperia L are ideally suited for those seeking stylish class-leading smartphones that don’t compromise on features”, said Calum MacDougall, Director of Xperia Marketing at Sony Mobile Communications. “Both of our new models benefit from Sony’s proven innovation and engineering expertise –whether you want to enjoy premium HD quality entertainment over 4G LTE on our mid-range Xperia SP or capture every moment in perfect detail with our more affordable Xperia L.”
Sony unveiled its latest flagship smartphone, the Sony Xperia Z, earlier this year and will hope that these new smartphones will help it achieve its aim of becoming the third largest smartphone manufacturer in the world during 2013.
