Samsung Tweets Date For Galaxy Nexus UK Release

Samsung has confirmed that its new Galaxy Nexus smartphone will be available to UK customers from 17 November.

After cancelling the launch of the phone earlier this month following the death of Steve Jobs, the rumour mill was rife with speculation on potential release time-frames. These were put to bed Thursday when the Korean Electronics Giant made the announcement on Twitter from its GalaxyNote World Tour in London.

High expectations

With such a long wait, much is expected of the phone formerly code-named Nexus Prime. It is the first smartphone based on Google’s Android 4.0 “Ice Cream Sandwich” (ICS) operating system, and is billed as strong competition for Apple’s iPhone 4S.

The phone features a 4.65 in HD Super AMOLED display technology at 720p resolution and a 1.2GHz dual core processor.  It also features software navigation buttons, a first for Android smartphones. Other features include the Ice Cream Sandwich new People app, cloud connectivity and access to more than 300,000 apps and games from Android Market.

This announcement is yet another feather in the cap for Samsung, who, it was earlier reported, is now ranked as the biggest seller of smartphones, world-wide.

The Samsung /Android combination is expected to keep Apple on its toes, as both phone and platform grow in popularity as a viable alternative to the iPhone.
