Waterproof Samsung Galaxy S4 Active Set For June Release

Samsung releases another variant of its flagship smartphone

Samsung has announced the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active, a waterproof variant on its current flagship smartphone designed to be more durable for outdoor use.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Active featurs IP67 dust and water protection and a water resistant earphone jack that will defend the smartphone from dust particles and protect it against water damage at a depth of one metre for up to 30 minutes.

This allows users to take underwater photos using the eight megapixel rear camera and two megapixel front camera, with ‘Aqua mode’ improving the quality and clarity of images.

Underneath this added protection, the device is powered by a 1.9GH quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage that can be expanded by up to 64GB through a MicroSD card slot.

Also on board are many of the features included in the original Samsung Galaxy S4, including S Travel, Group Play, Story Album and other Samsung applications.

“The Galaxy S4 Active offers all the great features of the original Galaxy S4, but with added innovative protective design elements to suit our most active customers,” said Simon Stanford, Vice President of IT & Mobile Division, Samsung Electronics UK & Ireland. “Built for an outdoors lifestyle, the Galaxy S4 Active is a life companion for all environments.”

The smartphone will be released in the UK this summer in three colours – urban grey, dive blue and orange flare.

The announcement comes less than a week after Samsung took the wraps off the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini, a 4.3-inch compact version of the Samsung Galaxy S4, which itself was released in April.

Samsung is the largest smartphone manufacturer in the world with a 30.8 percent share of the global market, according to research firm Gartner, contributing to record profits of £5.2 billion in the first three months of 2013.
