Samsung Executive Departs To Join Windows Phone

Samsung vice president of consumer and enterprise services Gavin Kim is to leave the company to take up the position of general manager of the Windows Phone team.

Kim was instrumental in the successful launch of the Galaxy SII Android phone and the Galaxy Tab, which was voted by readers of eWEEK Europe UK as their favourite tablet (apart from the iPad).

Spread the word

Kim said his mission will be to spread the message of Windows Phone and make it a more attractive proposition to both developers and consumers.

“I will be responsible to help set the future direction for the Windows Phone platform and to accelerate Microsoft’s trajectory to win the hearts and minds of consumers, carriers, device manufacturers, developers and partners, ” Kim told BGR

A Samsung statement said, “Gavin Kim has departed Samsung Mobile and we look forward to working with him in the future. In his new capacity, he will continue to be part of the larger Samsung family through our partnership with Microsoft.”

The announcement continues the recent momentum of the platform and comes just weeks after Nokia unveiled its first two phones running the Windows Phone operating system since it agreed a strategic partnership with Microsoft.

Microsoft recently announced that four new affordable phones running the Mango version of Windows Phone would be released soon as part of its efforts to aim the software at the lower-end of the market in order to eat into the market share of Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android.
