Quiz Of The Week: New Year Resolutions

Over the past few years, we have seen an explosion of new ideas in digital imaging, as mobile devices have pushed our demand for brighter, more energy efficient displays.

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has recently approved 4k as the new standard for high definition television, and average monitor resolution is climbing ever higher, and Apple’s Retina displays have caused a sharp increase in pixel density across mobile devices from all manufacturers.

All this goes to show that, as consumers, we are over HD. Just like MPEG-1 was eventually replaced by better quality MPEG-2, the current formats will be phased out to make room for higher quality digital content.

Feast your eyes

In 2013, Samsung and LG raced each other to release the first smartphone with a ‘curvy’ screen, while other manufacturers, including Sony and HTC, made 1920×1080 the norm for five-inch displays.

But it’s not just displays that are moving forward. Google Glass, unveiled in 2012, has already spawned plenty of imitations, mostly relying on projection prisms, and the Oculus Rift has transformed from an ambitious Kickstarter project into the most successful attempt at creating an immersive virtual reality environment.

Meanwhile, a team at HP is working on a new type of display that could finally project 3D images of the kind sent by Princess Leia to Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.
