As well as world-changing technology, the IT industry has been blessed by some pretty colourful characters, like Steve Ballmer and Larry Ellison, as well as statesman-like operators such as Bill Gates and Eric Schmidt. But what did they all do?

Most CEOs have fantastic hair. Some are famed for holding up flights on the runway for stylists, while others seem to get by without any at all. Some CEOs demand fantastic salaries, while others get by with only the incredible stock options.

Some CEOs have political ambitions, while others simply want to achieve a higher spiritual plane – or a faster executive jet plane.
