BT posted impressive results this week, with more profits andbig plans for better broadband. But how well do you know the company’s complex roots?
The British incumbent provider, formerly a nationalised monopoly, is the world’s oldest telecoms provider, having its roots in the telephone service launched by the General Post Office soon the technology was patented by inventor Alexander Graham Bell.
BT the British giant
As a private firm, BT launched and sold off a mobile phone arm, and rode the broadband revolution, whilst running various business branches and international wings.
It’s been criticised this year for its easy domination of the governments Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) programme, effectively gaining a near monopoly of rural broadband services, while competing hard for the more commercial end of the market.
Meanwhile, it’s back in mobile – sort of with the launch of its One Phone unified communications system for smaller businesses.
