Android phones, based on the mobile operating system from Google, have taken over the world. But there is more to Android than just a popular phone platform.
The Android system was announced the same year as Apple’s iPhone, and won users over, eventually taking a convincing lead in phone operating systems, which now gives it around a 75 percent share of the market. But it’s not just for phones.
The Android OS has appeared on wearable devices such as smart watches and Google Glass, as well as on cameras and a book-shaped PC made of cardboard. The operating system is open source, so it could show up almost anywhere.
Various phone makers have had a major part to play in the story of Android, with HTC and Samsung leading the way at various times. Motorola Mobility, now owned by Google, is obviously going to have a key role in future.
Android has been at the heart of controversy too, with Apple taking legal action to try and stamp out the competition, claiming the OS stole its ideas.
Given its major success in the market, there’s a strong possibility you have an Android in your pocket right now. But how well do you know it?
