Qinetiq To Lead MoD Consortium
Former MoD research arm contracted to protect it from cyber attacks
Qinetiq, the company formed when a research arm of the Military of Defence (MoD) was sold off, is to lead a new consortium aimed at protecting the MoD from cyber attacks.
The Enabling Secure Information Infrastructure (ESII) consortium has been appointed by the Defence, Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL)’s Centre for Defence Enterprise (CDE) to build a cloud ecosystem where multiple users would be able to access data remotely and securely.
Reunited at last
When Qinetiq was first formed in 2001, the UK held a majority share in the company, but it sold its stake in 2008.
DSTL and what is now Qinetiq comprised the UK’s Defence Evalutation and Research Agency (DERA), with the former partner being the largest scientific organisation in the British government, despite operating as a private enterprise. It carries out technological defence and security research for the government which is deemed to be too sensitive for the private sector.
The two organisations will work together once again to “improve cyber situational awareness”
