Oracle Releases Version 2 Of Exalogic Elastic Cloud

Oracle has made available a new version of Oracle’s Exalogic Elastic Cloud software, as well as a new migration tool that allows users to easily and quickly migrate data from Microsoft SQL Server to MySQL.

Also announced by Oracle is a new application aimed at electric and other utility companies, Oracle Utilities Operational Device Management, which can help utility companies manage their smart power grids and other infrastructure.

Cloud Upgrade

The new Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud Software 2.0 will allow users to perform one-click automated deployment of complex, multi-tier business applications. The new version also offers performance gains of up to 10x for applications that run on top of it, as well as faster application provisioning, the company said. Exalogic is built on open, industry-standard technologies and supports virtualisation of mission-critical business applications with near-native performance versus physical servers.

The new version also allows the consolidation of multiple applications on the same system as a private cloud, while eliminating security risks through complete application isolation, according to Oracle.

The Exalogic line, which enables enterprises to run their own cloud in a self-contained system, was announced in September of 2010 and became available in January 2011.

“Built on open, industry standards, Oracle Exalogic can support consolidation of hundreds of Java and non-Java applications and delivers lower total cost of ownership by supporting more transactions on less hardware and software with ease of management,” Hasan Rizvi, senior vice president of Oracle’s Fusion Middleware and Java Products, wrote in a statement.

Migration Tool

The new MySQL migration tool aims to help customers move their Microsoft SQL Server deployments over to MySQL to dramatically cut costs by up to 90 percent, according to Oracle.

The new migration tool integrates with MySQL Workbench, which allows the visual design, development and administration of MySQL databases, according to Oracle. “With MySQL Workbench, SQL Server developers and DBAs can quickly and easily convert existing applications to run MySQL on Windows as well as Linux and other platforms.”

The company also unveiled a new “MySQL for Excel” application plug-in that “enables data analysts to seamlessly access and manipulate MySQL data within Microsoft Excel,” as well as an enhanced version of the MySQL Installer for Windows.

“Oracle continues to deliver MySQL innovations and more value to Windows users and ISVs,” said Tomas Ulin, vice president of MySQL Engineering, a division of Oracle, in a statement.

Utilities App

Meanwhile, the release of Oracle’s new Utilities Operational Device Management application will add management capabilities for power companies and other utility providers to better serve their customers, according to Oracle.

The application is slated to help utilities better manage the configuration and inventory of their smart grids and microprocessor-based devices, including power consumption meters, access points, communications relays and other communication components that can’t be handled by traditional asset management systems. “Oracle Utilities Operational Device Management handles critical functions, such as managing and tracking updates and patches, as well as supporting governance and regulatory audits and smart grid Network Operations Center (NOC) processes,” the company said.

Oracle Utilities Operational Device Management is built on open standards and is compatible with Oracle Utilities Meter Data Management and other third-party metre data management applications.
