Nokia has shown off the first three smartphones to run the recently announced Windows Phone 8.1 operating system – the flagship Nokia Lumia 930 and the mid-range Lumia 630 and 635 – and has announced that all existing Nokia Windows Phone 8 handsets will receive the update eventually.
Windows Phone 8.1 will be packaged with a number of unique Nokia Lumia features, such as Sensorcore low-power motion sensing for Bing Health and Fitness, distributed through an over-the-air update called Lumia Cyan.
The Nokia Lumia 930 is described as the “flagship embodiment” of Windows Phone 8.1, which adds new live tile settings, a personal assistant called Cortana and enterprise mobility options.
The smartphone is powered by a 2.2 GHz quad-core Qualcomm snapdragon 800 processor, with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. There is no MicroSD card slot however, although this omission is offset by the inclusion of 7GB of cloud storage on Microsoft OneDrive.
The Lumia 930 boasts a metal and polycarbonate casing, complete with a five inch Clearblack full HD display, along with a 20 megapixel PureView camera equipped with Zeiss optics and an advanced rich recording feature.
Nokia’s commitment to wireless charging is reaffirmed with built in support for the Qi standard. The device will support LTE networks and is compatible with Near Field Communication (NFC) technology.
The Nokia Lumia 630 and Lumia 635 are mid-range handsets that aim to deliver an “uncompromised” Windows Phone 8.1 experience at a lower price. The Lumia 630 comes in single-SIM and dual-SIM variants, while the Lumia 635 boasts 4G support, but otherwise all three are identical.
Available in orange, bright green, bright yellow, and white and black, the three handsets are powered by a 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 quad-core processor, ship with 512MB of RAM and 8GB of storage, which can be expanded by up to 128GB through a MicroSD card slot. The smartphones also feature five megapixel cameras and 4.5-inch full HD displays.
Nokia promises that all of the features in Windows Phone 8.1 will be available on the Lumia 630 and 635, along with services such as HERE Maps, Microsoft Office, Nokia Camera and Mix Radio.
“Today we are introducing people to the best of Lumia and the best of Microsoft through three stunning devices based on Windows Phone 8.1,” said Stephen Elop, executive vice president of Nokia’s Devices and Services. “In addition to the new developments from Microsoft, Nokia is delivering people an uncompromised imaging experience, great design and better business phones. We’re also pleased to bring the great developments in Windows Phone 8.1 to the Lumia devices people love today.”
The Nokia Lumia 930 will be available in June costing $599 (£360) and the Lumia 635 will be $189 (£115) when it arrives this Summer. The Nokia Lumia 630 will be released in May, costing $159 (£95) for the single-SIM version and $169 (£100) for the dual-SIM variant.
Sadly, there was no mention of the Windows Phone-powered Nokia 3410 announced by the Finnish manufacturer earlier this week as an April Fool’s prank.
