4.7-Inch Nokia Lumia 625 Offers 4G For Less Than £200

The mid-range Nokia Lumia 625 Windows Phone will provide access to 4G networks for less than £200 when it is released in the third quarter of 2013.

Nokia said the estimated retail cost of the device will be €220 (£189) before taxes and any operator subsidies are taken into account, allowing for the potential expansion of the Windows Phone use base.

“The transition to 4G is gathering pace,” said Nokia product manager Vinay Jayakumar. “With a super-fast internet connection, there’s a real demand for big, beautiful screens that help bring all the content to life – this is where the Nokia Lumia 625 arrives with a really competitive price to match.”

Largest Lumia ever

The Lumia 625 is the largest smartphone in the range so far, boasting a 4.7-inch screen, but with a resolution of just 800 x480 and 221 pixels per inch (ppi), it is hardly the sharpest. However the large screen is billed as ideal for entertainment and mapping applications, as well as those that can tajke advantage of the 4G connection.

Its mid-range credentials are furthered by a 1.2 GHz dual core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor, 512 MB of RAM and 8GB of storage, although this can be expanded by up to 64GB through a MicroSD card slot and 7GB of cloud-based SkyDrive storage is also provided.

The handset will be available in a number of non-pretentiously named colours, including orange, yellow, bright green, white and black, along with an array of changeable shells, which Nokia says complements the customisable nature of the Windows Phone 8 live tiles.

Nokia smartphone announcements

The Nokia Lumia 625 is the company’s second major smartphone announcement in the past two weeks and follows in the footsteps of the new flagship Nokia Lumia 1020.

The former’s five megapixel camera pales in comparison to the 1020’s 41 megapixel behemoth, but it does include some of the same innovations, such as Nokia Smart Camera and Nokia Cinema graph. It also includes the latest version of Nokia’s take on Windows Phone, Nokia Lumia Amber.

Sales of Nokia Lumia smartphones increased by 32 percent during the second quarter of 2013 as cheaper Windows Phone 8 handsets started to gain traction with consumers. The Finnish manufacturer will hope the Lumia 625 is just as popular, especially since sales of its feature phones are declining.

“With our largest smartphone screen to date, the Nokia Lumia 625 is a perfect example of how Nokia is delivering leading smartphone innovation and experiences at every price point,” added Jo Harlow, executive vice president, Nokia Smart Devices.
