NGD Europe has made a 140,000 square foot level of its container-based data centre in South Wales available for immediate occupancy.
When opened in June last year, NGD claimed that the facility was the first in Europe to run entirely on power generated from renewable energy sources, as data centre operators look for more sustainable solutions.
The data hall can draw upon 180 megavolt ampere (MVA) of power and the centre is based on a Californian earthquake-proof design which includes triple-skinned walls and bomb-proof glass.
“Large cloud providers are demanding bigger, better and more secure containerised computing facilities in Europe,” said Simon Taylor, chairman of NGD, “Our new container floor offers the ultimate in accommodation for a very select number of large cloud providers searching for exceptional space, power and security all from under one roof.”
Container-based data centres have been growing in popularity as they become less expensive and more energy efficient. Businesses value their mobility and see them as a way of providing temporary compute capabilities until they are able to build new data centre facilities.
In December last year, a container-based data centre in Iceland claimed that it was the “world’s greenest energy centre”, using the country’s cheap geothermal energy to power equipment and the cold climate to cool servers.
AST Modular opened a similar data centre in Denmark in August which comprised 21 modular shipping containers and claimed high levels of energy efficiency.
