NetApp, Syncsort Team On Cloud Data Protection

Storage maker NetApp and data integration/protection software provider Syncsort announced on 1 September at VMworld 2010 that they have combined to market a new data protection package for mixed-bag data centres – which means just about all data centres.

Called NetApp Syncsort Integrated Backup, the new suite combines Syncsort backup management software, NetApp snapshot, clone and replication, and NetApp disk storage to provide data backup and recovery in a turnkey-type package.

Protection on physical and virtual machines

The new backup package protects data on physical and virtual machines and across a variety of equipment and software makers, said Patrick Rogers, NetApp Vice President of Solutions and Alliances.

Heterogeneous environments that mix physical and virtual servers with multiple storage platforms, operating systems, and applications create a unique set of challenges,” Rogers said. “These challenges are motivating many organisations to reexamine how they protect and store their rapidly growing data sets.

“By taking a more modern and comprehensive approach to data protection, companies reduce costs by significantly improving their IT operations and strategically redeploying resources for higher-value initiatives.”

NetApp Syncsort Integrated Backup features cataloged, searchable, application-aware snapshot-based backups; as well as instant virtual machine recovery, automated bare metal recovery and integrated disaster recovery, Rogers said.

NetApp is the world’s second-largest independent enterprise data storage provider. Syncsort, which has more than 12,000 deployments worldwide, provides improved data-movement performance through data integration and data protection solutions.

The new package is available now through channel partners Arrow Enterprise Computing Solutions and Avnet Technology Solutions.
