Glaser says the service is not attempting to compete with YouTube
Earlier this week, Real Networks launched its RealPlayer Cloud service in Europe, and the company was attending Mobile World Congress in Barcelona to promote its new product.
At the event, TechWeekEurope had a chance to talk to CEO of Real Networks Robert Glaser about the freemium model, competing with YouTube and the business potential of RealPlayer Cloud.
Like a phoenix
RealNetworks was founded in 1994 by Glaser, a former Microsoft executive who left the CEO post in 2009, but came back two years later in a bid to save the company which had struggled to adopt to the changing online video market.
Real Networks’ brand new product allows users to conveniently store their videos online, with the option of automatic backup from mobile devices. RealPlayer Cloud re-encodes video before every playback, taking into account available bandwidth and storage, to give viewers the highest quality experience possible, no matter what device or screen size.
