Motorola Atrix Selling Exclusively On Orange

Orange is poised to be the only carrier for Motorola’s Atrix smartphone when it launches today

Motorola’s Atrix Android 2.2 smartphone will make its debut in the UK today, available exclusively on Orange, where the handset comes for free with a two-year bundle.

Once launched, the Atrix will become the world’s first smartphone to sport a fingerprint recognition technology, which allows users to secure their data via a biometric system. Instead of keying PIN numbers, users can quickly unlock the phone with a single swipe.

Motorola’s Atrix will be available exclusively on Orange for three months. Customers can get the handset for free when choosing a two-year monthly package. The pay-monthly deals start from £35 a month, with 600 minutes of calls, unlimited texts and 450MB of mobile data.

Atrix’s dock accessories

To attract smartphone users, Motorola also offers ‘optional dock accessories’ with the Atrix, including the Lapdock, the Vehicle Dock, the HD Multimedia Dock and the Standard Dock.

Sold separately, the Lapdock (left) weighs 2.4 pounds and features an 11.6-inch display. With the Atrix docked into the slot at the back, the gadget will mirror the phone’s screen. It also operates on the phone’s processor, memory and storage, as well as its 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity.

“It’s like using a PC, but you also can view your mobile apps, scan messages and even make and take calls,” explains Motorola on its website.

For road users, the Vehicle Dock provides real-time traffic information. The dock comes with a voice-enabled search and dial capabilities, offering users “full turn-by-turn navigation”.

As for the HD Multimedia Dock, it connects the Atrix to HD monitor or HD TV for viewing on a larger screen, while the Standard Dock keeps the smartphone at a comfortable viewing angle while it charges.

The Atrix at T-Mobile

Despite the reports that Orange will exclusively carry the Atrix for three months, it is expected that T-Mobile UK, which is also a partner of Everything Everywhere, will get to sell the smartphone as early as next month. According to V3, the operator also intends to announce a selection of business-friendly tariffs for the forthcoming handset.

Running Google’s Android 2.2 operating system, Motorola’s Atrix features a 4-inch TFT capacitive touchscreen, 1GHz dual-core Tegra 2 processor and 16GB of internal storage.

Weighing 135 grams, the smartphone also comes with a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera, with LED flash and a geo-tagging ability, as well as a front-facing model that allows video chats.
