Microsoft is gearing up for the release of Windows 8 by announcing a range of Bluetooth accessories for devices running the latest version of its operating system.
The computing giant claimed it was the largest announcement of Bluetooth products it had ever announced at one time. It coincides with Microsoft Hardware’s 30th anniversary.
Windows 8 is due to be released in October and Microsoft claimed it will work equally well with both traditional PCs and tablets.
The four new products are designed specifically for portable use and feature a number of Windows 8-specific shortcuts and features.
“For 30 years, we’ve been creating products designed to light up features in Microsoft software and making it easier to get things done. It’s part of our DNA,” said Brett Kelleran, general manager of Microsoft Hardware. “In that way, it’s fitting that we are showcasing our first set of hardware products designed and optimized for Windows 8. It’s the reason why our group was formed and, in these products, that’s shining through.”
As computers become more mobile and feature fewer USB ports, accessory manufacturers must adapt, Microsoft said. It promised that all of the products announced today had a high level of craftsmanship.
The Microsoft Wedge Mobile Keyboard will retail for $79.95 (£50) and features hot keys, media keys as well as a cover which protects tablets from scratches and doubles as a tablet stand. Another keyboard, the Microsoft Sculpt Mobile Keyboard costs $49.95, is lightweight and features a battery saving mode which powers it down.
The Microsoft Sculpt Touch Mouse costs $49.95 and features four way scrolling while the $79.95 Microsoft Touch Mouse will be updated specifically for Windows 8 to incorporate finger swipes and movements for switching apps.
