Microsoft Heads For Biggest-Ever Patch Tuesday

Microsoft is planning to release 14 security bulletins on 10 August for Patch Tuesday, the company’s highest total ever.

The bulletins will cover 34 vulnerabilities across multiple products, including Windows, Internet Explorer, Silverlight and Microsoft Office. Eight of the bulletins are rated critical, while the six remaining bulletins are rated important.

“For those who keep track of such things, this will be the most bulletins we have ever released in a month; we have released 13 bulletins on a couple of occasions,” Angela Gunn, Microsoft Security Response Communications manager, wrote on the Microsoft Security Response Center blog on 5 August. “However, in total CVE count, this release ties with June 2010, so there’s no new record there.”

On 4 August the company released a fix for the Windows bug in the handling of shortcuts that was being targeted by attackers.

The flaw affected multiple versions of Windows, including Windows XP and Windows 7.
