Microsoft Offers 200GB SkyDrive Plan

Microsoft has announced a fresh SkyDrive plan, including 200GB for $100 per year on top of the 7GB of free storage it already offers.

The announcement came on the same day as Microsoft announced its latest tablet, the Surface 2. In the hope of enticing users into buying the latest piece of hardware out of Redmond, Microsoft announced plans for a load of free SkyDrive storage.

SkyDrive offer

“Just to put that in context: 200 GB is enough space to take a photo, every hour, from the moment someone is born, to the day they graduate from college,” said Omar Shahine, principal group programme manager for SkyDrive, in a blog post.

“To help people get the most out of Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2, customers purchasing either device will receive 200 GB of free SkyDrive storage for two years, free Skype calling to landlines in more than 60 countries for 1 year, and unlimited Skype WiFi on their Surface 2 or Surface Pro 2 at more than 2 million hot-spots worldwide for one year.”

The consumer storage market is getting crowded. Dropbox remains hugely popular, whilst Amazon and Google have popular services. Apple iCloud has a significant customer base also.

More business-friendly offerings are also flooding the market too, with players like Box claiming they have secure, enterprise-ready services.
