LG Smart Bulb Can Be Controlled By Your Smartphone

LG has announced a smart light bulb that can be controlled using a smartphone application, allowing users to take advantage of a range of lighting features while saving energy at the same time.

The LG Smart Bulb is compatible with a companion application which can be downloaded to smartphones running Android 4.3 and above and iPhones running iOS 6 and above.

Naturally, this app can be used to turn the light on and off, but it can also be used as an alarm clock which turns the lights on to wake you up, and as an additional security measure, with the bulb switching on at a certain hour to fool would-be burglars.

Additionally, there is a party mode which sees the bulb flash to the beat of music, although this feature is only available on the Android app. The LG Smart Bulb also promises to be 80 percent more energy efficient than a normal light bulb and the Korean manufacturer claims that even if it used up to five hours a day, it will be a decade before it needs replacing.

The bulb costs 35,000 won (£19.70) and is only available in  Korea, with no information regarding a UK release available at present.

As the Internet of Things becomes an increasingly mainstream concept, many manufacturers are looking at ways of using wireless technology to reduce energy use and save customers money. New research from British Gas recently revealed that more than half of smart meter users are now saving money due to the energy-efficient behaviours inspired by these devices, with nearly two thirds (64 percent) of those surveyed saving up to £75 per year.
