LG Nexus 4 Revealed By Carphone Warehouse

Carphone Warehouse appears to have inadvertently confirmed the existence of the LG Nexus 4 smartphone ahead of a Google event on Monday that is expected to be its official unveiling.

A pre-order page for the new handset revealed a number of details about the Nexus 4, which could be the first of a number of Nexus-branded smartphones to be released in the near future. Google reportedly want to use the branding to promote Android manufacturers and Sony has also been mentioned as a potential partner.

The Nexus 4 had been widely expected, with a Google software engineer posting pictures to his Google+ page that purport to be taken by the LG-made smartphone.

The pre-order page has now been pulled by the retailer, but it suggested that the smartphone would be available on the O2 and Vodafone networks for free on plans starting at £31 a month, with delivery expected on 30 October.

The Nexus 4 will boast a 4.7-inch high definition touchscreen protected by Gorilla Glass, Near Field Communication technology, an eight megapixel camera and 8GB of storage. It uses a 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 quad-core processor and will run Android 4.2.

This new version of Android will reportedly add a new version of Gmail and introduce a number of minor additions, such as swipe to delete.

Google has traditionally used the Nexus brand for reference phone platforms to show Android manufacturers what is possible with new versions of the mobile operating system. Its current flagship smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, hit the shelves last November and introduced version 4.0 of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich, which included a number of new features.

Samsung also built the Nexus S in 2010, while HTC created the Nexus One which debuted earlier this year. It has been suggested that the move to release a number of devices is to promote its Android partners struggling to challenge the dominance of Samsung on the platform.

Google has also released the Google Nexus 7, its first branded tablet, which was manufactured by Asus and released earlier this year.
