LG May Offer Non-4G Model Of G-Slate In UK

LG’s G-Slate could be made available to UK consumers in multiple variations, it has emerged, following its American launch with US operator T-Mobile.

The tablet, which was announced at the beginning of the month at CES 2011, is a 4G-capable model that runs on Google Android 3.0 (Honeycomb). According to LG, it will come with the “latest Google mobile innovations,” and has a theoretical download speed of up to 21Mbps.

Although 4G technology is currently unavailable outside the US, LG’s marketing strategy and planning team director James Choi hinted to Pocket-lint that the tablet might be shipped to other markets in non-4G variations.

“For the iPad, you have the Wi-Fi version, the 3G version, different kinds of versions. I’ll put it this way, even if the 4G version isn’t in the UK…” explained the director before being interrupted by a spokesperson for LG Electronics.

First 4G Honeycomb tablet

According to a spokesperson, the G-Slate is one of LG’s key forthcoming products, and the company is “trying to keep a tight lid on it”.

However, further information regarding the 4G tablet is expected during the world’s biggest mobile phone conference – the Mobile World Congress – which will run from 14-17 February in Barcelona, Spain.

Meanwhile, T-Mobile US has put up a registration page on its website for the G-Slate, encouraging customers to sign up for further information.

Customers will be notified of further specifications, pricing and release date when these details become available, said the company. It has been speculated to hit the store shelves in the US during the next few months.

Once released, the G-Slate will have to compete with its Korean Android-based rival Samsung Galaxy Tab and Dell’s seven-inch Froyo-powered Streak 7, which is also specifically designed for T-Mobile’s 4G network in the US.
