Lenovo has fired off its next shot into the battle for home computing with the release of a PC platform that fits onto a USB stick.
The ideacentre Stick 300 packs an entire PC onto one device that can be plugged in anywhere around the home or office, turning any TV screen or monitor with an HDMI port into a fully-functioning Windows computer.
Powered by an Intel Atom Z3735F processor, 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage the Stick 300 ships with Windows 8.1 but will be eligible for a free upgrade to Windows 10 from July 29.
“We’ve looked at the computing needs of travellers, business people and families, and realised that a truly portable and affordable solution would be a significant benefit to users of all kinds,” said Jun Ouyang, vice president and general manager, worldwide desktop and visuals, Lenovo.
“Our goal with the ideacentre Stick 300 is to give those users a sense of freedom and enhanced mobility, while packing a serious punch in a small device.”
The ideacentre Stick 300 will be available on Lenovo’s website, as well as Dixons and Amazon, from next month.
Lenovo is not the first PC manufacturer to launch such a highly-mobile PC product, however.
Earlier this year, Intel revealed its Compute Stick device, which also offered the ability to turn any display into a PC, and was boosted earlier this week by the release of a remote keyboard app.
Google also announced a PC-on-a-stick back in April, teaming up with Asus for the Chromebit, a $100 device which runs the company’s Chrome OS software.
