Kazam Launches ‘World’s Slimmest Smartphone’, The Tornado 348

British phone maker Kazam has announced another contender for the world’s thinnest smartphone with the new Tornado 348.

The device measures just 5.15mm across, and is the company’s most powerful device yet as it looks to expand its presence across the European market.

Slim-fit

Featuring a 4.8inch AMOLED 1280 x 780 HD Gorilla Glass screen, the metal-bodied Tornado 348 weighs just 95.5g. And if you’re worried that this may be too lightweight, Kazam says that if you break the handset’s screen in the first 12 months, it will replace it for free.

Powered up by an octa-core MT6592 processor from MediaTek, the Tornado 348, which will run Android 4.4 KitKat, also features an eight megapixel rear camera able to provide 1080p video capture, as well as an five megapixel front facing camera which should be ideal for taking selfies.

It will be available in Black and White variants across Europe from mid-November, costing £249 in the UK.

“We are delighted to be unveiling World’s slimmest smartphone,” said Kazam CEO Michael Coombes. “KAZAM remains focused on innovating in areas often overlooked, the KAZAM Tornado 348 combines superior design with heavy hitting features, all backed up by the KAZAM proposition, adding real value for consumers.”

Speaking at an event hosted by MediaTek, Coombes also hailed the partnership between Kazam and the Taiwanese chip manufacturer, saying that its assistance had been vital in the development of the Tornado 348.

“We’re here to disrupt and innovate in what is a very crowded market,” he said. “None of this would have been possible without MediaTek.”

“KAZAM is a prime example of the changing face of mobile technology – hitting the market with the slimmest mobile phone packed with our advanced, high performance MT6592 True Octa-core SoC,” said Jeffrey Ju, senior vice president and general manager of wireless communication at MediaTek. “This partnership stands as testament to the way we work to drive affordable technology into the hands of everyone.”

Kazam was formed last year by two former HTC executives as they looked to produce smartphones that specifically targeted the needs of the European market. The company showed off its first set of devices, including the LTE-enabled Kazam Thunder2 4.5L, at Mobile World Congress in February, and will be hoping the release of the Tornado 348 helps continue their upward progress.
