Rumours of the imminent arrival of the iPhone 5 are depressing the smartphone market, according to Gartner Group. But are TechWeekEurope readers affected?
Worldwide smartphone sales fell buy 2.3 percent in the second quarter of this year, according to Gartner, which blames the economy – but also the fact that Apple’s iPhone 5 is rumoured to be on its way. The blip hasn’t hurt Apple much yet, as its share of the smartphone market rose by 2.3 percent, but Gartner has warned that the third quarter of this year might be tricky for the company, if the new phone doesn’t arrive soon.
Meanwhile, Samsung’s share has gone up, buoyed by its Android sales, and (probably) by its high-profile patent case with Apple.
Whatever the ins and outs of all this, we want to know how this is affecting you. Are you holding out for an iPhone 5, or is your existing iPhone or Android perfectly adequate?
Other, less-favoured platforms are also waiting for an update. Windows Phone 8 is due out in a few months. Meanwhile, RIM’s long-awaited BlackBerry 10 platform is not expected until 2013, which will surely test the loyalty of the vendor’s customers.
Click on the poll, and let us know whether you are waiting for the iPhone 5, or going elsewhere.
