Huawei Debuts CloudEngine 12800 Super-Switch

Chinese networking and telecoms giant Huawei showcased what it claims to be the industry’s highest-performance data centre switch at Interop expo in Las Vegas yesterday.

The company said its CloudEngine 12800 provides switching capacity three times the highest level currently available on the market and bandwidth four times higher than the competition.

Huawei is China’s largest networking and telecommunications equipment supplier and second-largest supplier of mobile telecommunications infrastructure in the world.

Its new CloudEngine 12800 is advertised as having the switching capacity of up to 48Tbps and bandwidth of 2Tbps per slot, which is higher than any other switch on the market.

CloudEngine 12800 supports high-density connectivity for 100GE, 40GE and 10GE interfaces, as well as network virtualisation, storage and network convergence. The CloudEngine series can maintain evolution of four generations of servers over a 10-year span, helping create a truly sustainable infrastructure, according to Huawei.

“We are excited to introduce the CloudEngine 12800, Huawei’s latest data centre switches that provide the industry’s highest performance and help customers build scalable, virtualised and converged data centre networks in the cloud computing era,” said William Xu, CEO of the Huawei Enterprise Business Group.

As one of Interop’s core network providers, Huawei built a highly reliable campus network for the show itself, providing connectivity for over 350 exhibitors and 15,000 attendees.

The company has also demonstrated its full-view telepresence system at the event. While featuring huge screens with ultra-thin bezels, it is also cutting down the total cost of ownership by 30 percent thanks to lower bandwidth, power and space consumption.

By the end of 2011, Huawei had shipped over 2100 telepresence systems globally, and is the world’s second largest provider by shipments according to Frost & Sullivan’s market data. It’s no wonder Cisco recently identified the Chinese company as its main competitor.
