Greenplum Announces Unified Analytics Platform

Database software company Greenplum has announced a new product which it claims is the first Unified Analytics Platform (UAP).

The company, which is owned by EMC, declared that it was “driving the future of big analytics” with its UAP, which fuses together three main components, Greenplum database for structured data analysis, Greenplum HD for unstructured data analysis and Greenplum Chorus which allows for easy collaboration.

Easy Collaboration

Greenplum HD is built on the Apache Foundations Hadoop project and provides a software framework which permits companies to process and run analytics on massive amounts of unstructured data from a variety of sources of data such as calls, tweets, emails, picture and video. When combined with the Greenplum database, Greenplum claims it offers a unified solution for enterprises.

The inclusion of Chorus means that this data can be accessed by anyone and anywhere within the organisation, while a social network platform allows for collaboration within the company. This simplified process means more employees are able to run data experiments.

“Chorus breaks down the walls between all of the individuals involved in the data science team and empowers everyone who works with your data to more easily collaborate and derive insight from that data,” said Greenplum.

Data storage specialist EMC announced plans to acquire Greenplum in July in a move which was seen as a chance for the storage market as EMC did not have a competitive warehousing choice in its product portfolio until this point.

The announcement is the latest in a number of recent developments in big data. Last week, HP announced its first Autonomy product since it acquired the company, the Idol 10 platform, which claimed to be the first building block which analysed 100 percent of information. SAP then followed HP’s lead this week when it acquired SuccessFactors in a bid to bolster its cloud computing portfolio.
