Google Play Android App Gets Redesign

Google has started rolling out a new version of the Google Play digital marketplace for Android smartphones and tablets, boasting a redesigned interface.

It is compatible with devices running Android 2.2 Froyo and above, with users around the world receiving the update in the next few weeks. The search giant claims the new version will be simpler and cleaner to use, with users able to find books, films, games and apps quickly.

The focus is on larger images with similar themed content grouped together. However, this presumably means fewer items can be displayed at any one time. Google says it has also simplified the purchasing process so that users can get their content quicker.

More than 15 billion applications have been downloaded from the marketplace, which was rebranded as Google Play last year. It is one of a number of stores on the Android platform, with rival marketplaces such as the Amazon App Store and Yandex store competing for customers.

Security concerns about Google Play persist, with malicious apps regularly listed on the store, while some developers have expressed privacy concerns. One Australian developer has claimed the company was providing him with personal information about everyone who purchased his application through Google Play.
