Football Coach Uses Google Glass To View Real-Time Match Stats

Atletico Madrid assistant coach German Burgos is believed to have become the first person in world football to use Google Glass during a match, after he was pictured using the wearable device during his team’s 2-0 victory over Getafe at the weekend.

Burgos was apparently using an application known as ‘Mediacoach’, developed by the Liga de Futbol Profesional (LFP), the governing body for Spain’s top two divisions, to view real-time statistics during the match.

Such information is freely available elsewhere on the Internet and television, but Burgos’ use of Google Glass during a match demonstrates how the device can be more convenient than a PC, smartphone or tablet in certain situations.

Atletico Madrid tweeted an image (left) of the stats that Burgos was able to see during the game, while the LFP claims its service is a world first.

“The product allows the analysis of games in real time and the extraction of data from each game; clubs will have all the information about their own game, and of the sides they will face throughout the season,” the organisation told The Metro. “It will be the first time that Google Glass integrates such a useful footballing service.”

Google Glass has so far only been available to selected developers since it was launched last year, but Google is currently offering members of the general public the chance to purchase the device for $1,500 (£894). The sale will only last for one day, 15 April 2014 (today) and customers have to be resident in the US.

The search giant is hoping that Glass will be a fixture in a number of workplace environments, not just football stadiums and training grounds, with its new ‘Glass at Work’ programme designed to help businesses learn how the technology could be beneficial their business.
