The Firefox OS-powered ZTE Open C is now available to purchase in the UK through eBay, with the entry-level smartphone running the latest version of Mozilla’s web-based mobile operating system.
The ZTE Open C is targeted at first time smartphone buyers and early adopters wanting to try out Firefox OS. It costs £69.99 and is also available to users in the US, Germany, Russia and a number of other countries.
The smartphone was first unveiled at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona earlier this year and comes with a four-inch display, 1.2GHz dual core processor and 512MB of RAM. The device shipped to users will be an unlocked global version of the Open C and will not come preinstalled with any network specific applications.
The latest version of Firefox OS adds a number of new features, including Dual SIM dual standby (DSDS), which allows users to manage two different SIM cards, new imaging options, adaptive search, simplified access to the music player and smart collections of apps which are grouped together automatically.
Users can now send MMS messages to email addresses, save drafts and get delivery notifications, while there is support for email notifications and POP3. Advanced Bluetooth tools allow for multiple files to be transferred, while Mozilla promises that system apps should start quicker and that scrolling has been improved. Developers will also benefit from tools that should result in more immersive video and audio, new APIs and NFC tools.
