Facebook Brings Hashtags To Platform

Facebook has decided it wants to be a bit more like Twitter, and a host of other Internet big guns, so is adding clickable, searchable hashtags to the world’s biggest social network.

Users will be able to search for a specific hashtag from their search bar, like #Zuckerberg4President or #OMGROFLLMAO, or click on hashtags that originate on other services. They can also specify who sees their hashtags, as Facebook looks to offer some more granular privacy options.

Facebook hashtags

Facebook members can expect more features, like trending hashtags, in the coming weeks and months, according to Greg Lindley, Facebook product manager.

“Similar to other services like Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, or Pinterest, hashtags on Facebook allow you to add context to a post or indicate that it is part of a larger discussion,” Lindley said in a blog post.

“When you click on a hashtag in Facebook, you’ll see a feed of what other people and Pages are saying about that event or topic.

“Hashtags are just the first step to help people more easily discover what others are saying about a specific topic and participate in public conversations.”

Hashtags could be good news for advertisers as well, as they could target campaigns on Facebook around trending topics with greater ease. With CEO Mark Zuckerberg still disappointed in the company’s share price, he’ll be doing everything in his power to make Facebook more of an attractive marketing platform.
