EMC World: EMC Plots Data Domain Dedupe Domination

EMC has built on its 2009 acquisition of Data Domain, releasing a fresh deduplication storage system that boasts some impressive specs.

The Data Domain DD990 is “the world’s fastest dedupe appliance”, according to EMC, and is capable of backing up 248TB of information in eight hours, with a throughput of 31TB per hour. There’s also up to 1.3PB of usable capacity and the ability to replicate up to 270 remote sites into a single system, the company said at EMC World today.

It brings six times the speed and three times the capacity of the nearest competitor, according to EMC. There’s added support for EMC’s database offering in Greenplum and other database management offerings from Oracle and Quest. There is also improved support for Symantec back-up products.

Invulnerable architecture…

The product is based on the ‘Data Domain Invulnerability Architecture’, which “gives customers confidence that what we back up will be there for them,” said BJ Jenkins, president for EMC’s backup recovery systems. “This gives you end to end verification… it is about data integrity.

“This is something a software vendor alone cannot do.”

EMC thinks its dedupe technology can cut storage requirements by 10 to 30 times, “making disk cost-effective for onsite retention and highly efficient for network-based replication to disaster recovery sites”.

The vendor has also introduced a new version of its Avamar software for VMware backup and recovery. EMC said it would offer three times faster backup and 30 times faster recovery over competitors.

There’s also some expanded Microsoft Hyper-V features, so those running on that virtual environment will be able to enjoy the EMC services.
