EE 4G is now live in ten more UK towns and cities, with the operator revealing it plans to add a further 19 locations before Christmas, with record sales predicted in the run up to 25 December.
LTE coverage has now expanded to Bath, Bournemouth, Brighton, Cambridge, Darlington, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Northampton, Poole, Portsmouth and Redcar, bringing the total number of current EE 4G locations to 141.
Aberdeen, Braintree, Cheltenham, Chester, Dundee, Durham, Exeter, Gloucester, Grimsby, Ipswich, Lincoln, Middlesbrough, Norwich, Peterborough, Plymouth, Stoke-on-Trent, Swansea, Swindon and York will all be added in the next three weeks.
The number of towns and cities covered by EE 4G is significantly more than any of its rivals, which is hardly surprising given that it has enjoyed a considerable head start. Ofcom granted EE permission to launch an LTE service last October using its existing 1800MHz spectrum.
EE currently has 1.2 million 4G subscribers and has refreshed its tariffs in the hope of maintaining its lead despite the arrival of competing services. Vodafone and O2 rolled out their own LTE networks in August, while Three’s 4G service is expected to launch any day now – at no extra cost to new and existing customers.
EE’s superior speeds and coverage mean it is the most popular 4G operator among TechWeekEurope readers, although a significant number say they are likely to wait and sign up for LTE services with Three when they become available – that operator is not charging extra for 4G when it delivers it.
