EDL Backers Warned To Stay Vigilant After Hack

The far-right English Defence League (EDL) is warning its supporters to “remain extra vigilant” after a hacking incident that resulted in hundreds of names and addresses being stolen.

The security breach took place last weekend, when a clothing website linked to the group was accessed by hackers.

Donor lists as well as payments systems were reportedly compromised, with personal details belonging to hundreds of EDL supporters being circulated on the web.

After the exposure, the groupemailed its members, apologising for the incident and the threatened safety of those who have been affected.

Mujahideen Hacking Unit

Police have yet to confirm who was behind the security breach, despite speculations surrounding a group known as the Mujahideen Hacking Unit.

Meanwhile, concerns have been raised that there might be potential reprisals, as the EDL has staged a number of protests against what it calls the ‘Islamification of Britain’.

The group denied its association with racism and anti-Islamism, while its opponents such as United Against Fascism describe the EDL’s agenda as “blatantly Islamophobic”.

The news follows a giant hack of Gawker Media’s servers earlier this month, involving the theft of almost 200,000 user IDs and passwords.
