An email from retailer DSGi has confirmed that Currys and Dixons will be selling the Apple iPad in the UK.
A memo leaked in the Times revealed that the firms’ stores would be selling the iPad, giving it a two month head start on other shops, after Apple’s own stores begin selling the tablet in Britain.
“I can now tell you that the information in The Times article is correct and Apple will be announcing their distribution plans in the next few days,” said a DSGi spokesperson.
The distribution plans will be the tricky thing, however, as no-one knows how many iPads any store will have. Apple fans who haven’t ordered online will have to choose whether to take their chances queuing outside an Apple Store, a Currys or a PC World.
Apple has not responded to eWEEK Europe’s requests for information about the actual availability of iPads in its own stores and those of DSGi.
The iPad’s launch in the UK has been dogged by delays, thanks to high demand elsehwere, as Apple sold one million iPads in the first month. After initially planning to launch the iPad in the UK in April, Apple has warned that those who ordered the device online will have to wait until 9 June.
After its launch, the iPad is expected to trigger a goldrush in tablet sales. Devices are also expected from HP as well as Dell. Our review sees the Apple device as a work in progress, however, until later this year when it will gain multitasking with the release of iPhone OS 4
