Dell Bets On Automation With Gale Technologies Acquisition

Dell has acquired Gale Technologies, an  infrastructure automation software provider, as it also formed a new Enterprise Systems & Solutions group.

The acquisition comes just a day after Dell reported disappointing results, as profits slumped 47 percent with PC sales down massively. Its enterprise businesses are growing, however, as its servers and networking operation saw sales rise 11 percent year-on-year.

Dell looks to the cloud

Its latest purchase will boost the Texas firm’s cloud orchestration offerings, as Gale’s technology offers simplified provisioning across heterogeneous infrastructures, delivering automated physical and virtual resource allocation.

As for the Enterprise Systems & Solutions division, it will focus on “converged and enterprise workload solutions”, Dell said. Confusingly, it will report to the Enterprise Solutions Group, which has been up and running at Dell for some time now, and has various other subdivisions, such as the Enterprise Product Group.

“Today, enterprises need solutions that enable operational benefits of speed, efficiency, and flexibility in the allocation and use of resources,” said Marius Haas, president of the Dell Enterprise Solutions Group.

“Gale Technologies integrates well with our Active Infrastructure family, and provides an intuitive, flexible and comprehensive foundation for application, virtual desktop infrastructure and private cloud deployments for our customers.”

Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Others have made big purchases in the automation and cloud orchestration space. Just earlier this week, Cisco announced plans to splash $125 million on Cloupia, an infrastructure management software vendor.
