Dell looks to be taking on the Microsoft Surface Studio with the reveal of the Canvas 27, a large touchscreen designed to augment a PC and monitor setup to form a large dual screen workstation.
While Microsoft’s Studio acts as an all-in-one PC with a large touchscreen targeted at people working in creative industries, the Canvas is simply a second scree device.
Yet, it comes sporting a resolution of 2560 x 1440, has a 100 percent Adobe RGB colour gamut, which should satisfy people carrying out professional photo editing, and weighs in at 8.4kg.
A accompanying stylus is also on offer called the Canvas Pen, which has 2,048 levels of pressure sensitivity, interchangeable nibs and two programmable buttons. Like the Studio, it comes with small peripherals that can be placed on the touchscreen to trigger specific interactions.
Featuring a 27 inch UltraSharp 4K display, also available in Del’s InfinityEdge specification, the workstation can be equipped with either Intel’s latest Kaby Lake processors or the Skylake Xeon E3-1200 CPU, and either an AMD Radeon Pro WX 4150 or Radeon Pro WX 7100 graphics cars which come with 4GB or 8GB of RAM respectively.
Speaking on RAM, the AIO can be equipped with up to 64GB of it, offering enough power for some of the most intensive desktop tasks.
Dell also showcased the Precision 7720, a mobile workstation that also sports Intel’s Kaby Lake processors, starting from the Core i5-7300HQ going up to a Xeon E3-1535M v6 chip, as well as offering a choice of graphics cards from either AMD or Nvidia.
Like the AIO, memory goes up to a hefty 64GB, running at 2400MHz, though users wanting faster RAM can specify 32GB of DDR4 SuperSpeed memory running at 2667MHz.
Storage meanwhile goes up to 4TB and comes in a combination of traditional hard disk, SATA SSD and a single rapid PCIe NVMe SSD.
On the outside the new Precision workstation features a basic 17.3 inch TN display running a resolution of 1600×900, but can be specified with a more vibrant IPS display offering a full HD resolution of 1920×1080 or a UHD 3840×2160 dIGZO display with 100% Adobe RGB colour gamut.
In short, Dell is offering a mobile workstation with option, and it will go on sale February 28 with prices starting at $1,799 (£1460).
Despite the much touted ‘death of PCs’ line, with the new workstations and desktop tech, Dell does not appear to be concerned about leaving its PC roots anytime soon.
