Poll: Do Organisations Use Cloud Without Informing IT?

Are your colleagues using the cloud without a licence? We want to know if cloud services are under control in your company.

Our last poll asked our readers what they thought of Julian Assange, following his retreat to the Ecuadorian embassy last week. It found that the majority of you consider him to be a freedom fighter, despite (or because of)  the embarrassment he has caused governments around the world and his continued attempts to dodge extradition to Sweden.

But now we want to find out whether you think that departments in your organisation are taking on a different authority. Not the law, but their IT department. Are people using cloud services without permission?

Cisco’s State Of The Cloud Survey showed that that cloud is becoming more accepted by British businesses, with the number of companies planning to use cloud services rising from 52 percent last year to 90 percent this year.

Changing views on security have helped. Last year, three quarters of respondents held security fears over the cloud, a number which has decreased to 52 percent this time round.

But interestingly, Cisco reports that 32 percent of the IT people it spoke to believe that colleagues in other departments are using the cloud without informing them.

This number has risen from 21 percent last year, but we think IT departments may be underestimating the extent to which their colleagues are going behind their backs.
